Stop and Smell the Ocean
I used to tell my students to stop and smell the roses once in a while but I have since changed my view to stop and smell the ocean. This is a change in view and pace. When you stop to smell the ocean, you seem to feel calmer and more rejuvenated.
As a new west coaster, I have noticed the chill and enjoyment of walking along the ocean and also the time it takes to do it. Time is always needed. I don't think we ever take enough time for ourselves as educators. We are always worrying about our students and not really ourselves. I was that teacher who volunteered for everything the students could want and now I am always sitting on my hands in meetings and taking the to evaluate whether or not I can fit that into my schedule. Reevaluating my time allocation is important.
I have always believed that I can will away any illness and I prided myself in never missing school. Still today, I believe I can will away my illness. Sadly, I am wrong and I need to take time to work on myself and lower my stress and anxiety to help with my heart condition. Life has a funny way of teaching us what we really need to learn.
So, I am trying my best to help others to understand it is OK to take time for you. We need to feel balanced and grounded so we can give of ourselves to others. As an educator, you are a giver by nature and you forget to give to yourself too. Take the time for you and smell the ocean. It is not a quick fix but a long journey we must take to keep yourself balanced.
